Budget-Friendly Fun for the Family

Category: Parents & Kids Magazine March 2017 Issue

Trips to Disney World are amazing but not always in the budget for some families. Believe it or not, there are still incredible ways to have fun without spending an arm and a leg. The Jackson metro area has countless options for families, date nights, or just for people wanting to get out and do something different. Experiences are priceless and don’t have to be expensive. Here are a few ideas of budget-friendly, affordable things to do with your family.

Visit a state park- LeFleur’s Bluff State Park is a 305-acre park is located at 3315 Lakeland Terrace in the heart of Jackson. It offers fishing spots, nature trails, and other fun and free activities for families. There is even a 9-hole golf course and driving range for dad. For a day-use entry fee for your car it costs $4.00 plus $0.50 for each person over 6 people. Affordable, and the perfect place for your little ones to burn off all of their energy.

Visit a Mississippi swamp- Loading up the kids to visit a swamp will be a memory they never forget. Cypress Swamp is located near the reservoir, not far from the city. The winding trails and looming trees give it an eerie feel. Muddy water surrounding old wooden bridges and walking trails that wind through the woods will keep your children entertained and they will get tons of exercise and fresh air.

$5 movie night- Several movie theaters in the Jackson area have $5 movie days/nights. This can be the perfect family outing for that movie your kids have been dying to see, or for a date night with your spouse! UA Parkway Place Stadium in Flowood has $5 movies every Tuesday. Tinsel Town in Pearl also has $5 movie day on Tuesday. If the day is especially hot, or storms are rolling in then treat your family to this affordable fun activity!

Take a trip to the zoo: It’s hard to go wrong with a trip to the Jackson zoo! This is always an affordable and fun trip for the whole family. Animals are both educational and open up countless discussions about life and how to take care of the earth.

Spend a day at the nature center: The city of Clinton has an amazing Nature Center that is a full on educational experience. It has walking trails and educational displays in a part of the preserved tract of woods right in the heart of Clinton. The trails are open 7 days a week from 7 a.m. until sunset.

Visit a local museum: There are several museums in the metro area that cater to all ages and interests. The Mississippi museum of Art boasts beautiful collections of work. They constantly have events throughout the week with the schedule posted on their website (msmuseumart.org). The Mississippi Museum of Natural Science is the largest museum in the state of Mississippi. It costs $6 to get in for adults, and $4 for children.

Tour your local fire station: The City of Jackson has a historic fire museum located on Woodrow Wilson Drive. The station boasts a museum adjacent to the fire station. There are four fire engines that are often on display at the station ranging from the early 1800s to the 1960s. If the firefighters aren’t busy saving lives, they may even give your kids a slide down the fire pole and show them what life is like in the day of a firefighter.

In the fast-paced day and age of today, it’s easy to drop a hundred dollars trying to entertain your family. Hopefully this list helps you find some simple things you can do that will only cost you a few bucks and still create incredible memories. In whatever your family chooses to do, being present is the key to having fun. Whether you’re riding rides at Disney World, or singing along to music in the car, being there for your husband, your kids, or your mom and dad is the memory they will forever remember. Fun can be had on a budget is priceless at the same time.
